HIFU (high-intensity focused ultrasound) is a non-surgical cosmetic treatment which utilises ultrasound technology to encourage the production of collagen, resulting in firmer, more youthful skin. At Belmore Facial Clinic we are delighted to be providing our patients with ULFIT “The world’s first portable HIFU system for non-surgical face lifting and body contouring.”
HIFU has been around for a while, however, it has not always been utilised for cosmetic treatments. In the beginning, HIFU was created as a way to treat certain types of cancer, it was through this usage that scientists discovered its significant skin-lifting and tightening properties.
The type of ultrasound technology that is used during a HIFU treatment is not the same as that used for medical imaging. Instead, HIFU utilises high-energy waves to target specific areas of the face and body to produce the desired results.
HIFU uses focused ultrasound energy waves to target layers of skin beneath the surface. These energy waves heat up the tissue and once the cells reach the desired temperature this causes cellular damage. While this may sound counterproductive, it is this damage that stimulates our cells to increase collagen production, providing structure to the skin and improving firmness.
HIFU can also be used for the reduction of stubborn fat in the following areas:
HIFU Is a non-invasive and non-surgical treatment, therefore, it does have its limitations and will not be suitable for those hoping for very dramatic results. For patients who would like dramatic lifting and tightening results, a traditional surgical facelift may be preferred.
HIFU is ideal for those patients who would prefer a more subtle, natural result, without the pain, downtime or cost associated with surgery.
HIFU works best for those aged 30-60 with mild to moderate skin laxity, unfortunately, those with more severe skin laxity will not see noticeable results.
A good candidate for HIFU will have enough stubborn fat cells in the treatment area, no large scars or redundant skin folds in the treatment area, mildly crepey and wrinkled skin and those who have a lowered brow line.
HIFU would not be recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women. Those with open wounds, lesions, skin infections, and severe or cystic acne in the treatment area would also not be suitable for HIFU.
Patients with metal stents or electrical implants in the treatment area are not candidates for HIFU, along with those with a haemorrhagic disorder.
